If you have an open work permit, you can work as a truck driver in Canada. However, you can only work on international routes if you are a Canadian citizen or have the correct permit to work in the US. If you don’t have an open work permit, you can apply for the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which allows employers to hire people without a work permit if that particular industry is facing labour shortages. It is only a short-term permit and you must assure the Canadian government, you’ll leave once it expires.
Truck drivers in Canada can expect to make around $24.93 per hour. With recent labour shortages, you’re likely to get a better paying job and also several benefits including medical, dental, and RRSP. The salary range for a long haul driver is $55,000 to $65,000 per year, very close to careers people choose after graduating from a university.
