Right now, Ontario’s transportation sector is growing. Trucking companies need qualified drivers, and some of the highest-paying jobs go to drivers with a full Class A licence. A restricted licence limits employment opportunities, better routes, and long-term stability.
Let’s walk through what each licence type means, then dive into the real benefits of upgrading from a restricted to a full Class A licence in Ontario.
What is a Restricted Class A Licence?
A restricted Class A licence, also referred to as a Class A with Condition R, allows drivers to operate tractor trailers that meet certain limitations. This licence applies when you take your road test using a vehicle that only has automatic transmission.
Under a restricted Class A licence:
- You cannot haul double trailers
- You cannot drive trucks with manual transmission
What Is a Full Class A Licence?
A full Class A licence is the highest level of commercial driver certification in Ontario. It allows you to operate almost any combination of truck and trailer, including those equipped with air brakes and manual transmissions.
To obtain a full Class A licence, drivers must complete Ontario’s Mandatory Entry Level Training program, commonly referred to as MELT and opt for training on manual transmission. During the program, they’ll learn using both manual and automatic transmission.
Most Class A MELT programs also include air brake training, which is required to add the Z endorsement to your licence. Without this endorsement, you cannot legally operate any commercial vehicle or trailer that uses an air brake system.
8 Benefits of Upgrading to a Full Class A Licence
1. Qualify for Higher Paying Positions
Full Class A licence holders are eligible for long haul, cross provincial, and cross border routes that typically pay more. These roles often include mileage bonuses, health benefits, and increased job security.
Restricted licence holders are usually limited to local deliveries, depot runs, and short distance hauls. These roles may offer consistent hours, but the pay scale is significantly lower and the potential for advancement is limited.

2. Operate Trucks with Double Trailers
The restricted licence also blocks you from towing double trailers, even if you have the air brake endorsement. Upgrading to a full Class A licence removes these limitations. You will be able to operate more advanced equipment and meet job requirements for a larger number of transport companies.
3. Eliminate the Manual Transmission Restriction
Since July 2022, Ontario added a condition for Class A licence holders who complete their road test using an automatic, semi automatic, or automated manual vehicle. If your test was not completed using a manual transmission, your licence will include a restriction that prevents you from operating manual Class A vehicles.
There is no separate manual Class A licence. Instead, the restriction is tied to the type of vehicle used during your road test. To avoid this limitation, you must complete your test in a manual transmission truck.
4. Increase Job Security and Future Proof Your Career
Ontario’s transportation and warehousing sectors continue to grow. According to Government of Canada data, demand for commercial drivers remains high, especially in long haul freight and specialty transport.
Most of these positions require a full Class A licence. If you’re considering a long-term career in the trucking industry, start by investing in the correct program.
5. Gain Access to Specialized Transport Roles
Fuel delivery, livestock transport, and equipment hauling are examples of specialized jobs that require full Class A credentials. These roles often involve higher responsibility but offer better pay and scheduling flexibility.
6. Become Eligible for Owner Operator or Independent Work
Many drivers eventually want to run their own business, purchase their own vehicle, or work as independent contractors. A full Class A licence is required for insurance, compliance, and contract eligibility in this space.
7. Increase Credibility and Professional Standing
Employers often look beyond experience when hiring drivers. They prefer candidates who have completed MELT training, hold full licences, and show a commitment to safe, responsible driving.
8. Learn More and Strengthen Your Skills
MELT programs include training on shifting techniques, coupling and uncoupling, logbooks, inspections, and defensive driving. You will also gain hands-on experience with different trailer types and road conditions.
