How Much Do DZ Careers In Ontario Pay?

DZ truck driving careers like local delivery drivers, snow plow drivers, and construction haulers are in steady demand across Ontario.

As of 2025, the average DZ driver in Ontario earns about $23.49 per hour, which works out to roughly $48,870 per year. Specialized positions, such as snow plow operators, can earn $26–$30 per hour, with some call-in roles paying as high as $40 per hour during peak winter storms.

DZ Jobs and Their Payscale

DZ truck roles cover city deliveries, construction haulage, waste collection, and winter road work. Pay shifts with equipment, schedule, and union status, but current Ontario job postings show clear patterns you can trust.

  • General DZ driver: most listings sit around $21 to $24 per hour, with an Ontario average near $23.49.
  • Snow plow operator: higher seasonal rates, often $26 to $30+ per hour, with an Ontario average near $26.31. Premiums can rise during major storms.
  • Dump truck driver: broad range by contract type. Averages show $21 to $23 in some cases, while others report $26+ based on recent postings and self-reported wages.
  • Ready-mix driver: many roles post $21 to $25 on averages, while select employers advertise $30 to $36 for experienced operators.
  • Waste collection DZ: averages near $20.79 province-wide, with some postings in the low-$30s depending on employer and route.

Union scale, standby pay, call-in rates, and overtime can move your total income well above base hourly figures during peak periods, especially in winter operations.

How to Get Your DZ Licence in Ontario?

If you want steady, good-paying work as a truck or snow plow driver in Ontario, the first step is your DZ licence. Here are the exact steps to follow:

1) Confirm eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid Class G licence or higher, meet vision standards, and complete a medical examination for commercial driving.

2) Write the knowledge test at DriveTest

Book your Class D knowledge test at a DriveTest Centre. Bring ID, your medical paperwork, and payment. The test is multiple-choice and available in English or French.

3) Attend Mandatory Training

Training requirements for DZ are shorter compared to the AZ licence. Unlike AZ, which requires the Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) program, DZ training programs are flexible. Many schools offer 1–3 week DZ courses that combine in-class instruction, air brake training, and road practice. Costs usually range between $4,000 and $6,000 depending on the transmission and if Z endorsement is bundled in.

4) Pass the Class D road test

Arrive with your Daily Inspection Report and the inspection Schedule for your vehicle. Expect a pre-trip portion and an on-road evaluation of control, awareness, and compliance.

5) Keep your licence in good standing

Commercial drivers must meet ongoing medical and vision standards. Class D drivers complete knowledge and vision testing at renewal, with additional testing after certain incidents or at higher ages.
