Az or Dz – Which Commercial Licence Is Right For Me?

A man thinking if he sould opt for an AZ or DZ commercial license.

You might see in the news every few days that the trucking industry in Canada is experiencing a big demand for commercial drivers. According to a recent report by PwC, the industry is facing a shortage of approximately 20,000 drivers, a figure that is expected to grow in the coming years. Not only that, around 34,000 drivers are expected to leave the workforce in the next 12 months, increasing the demand further.

This makes it clear that commercial trucking in Canada presents promising career opportunities. Supported by a substantial income, perks and benefits, and growth potential, this is a well-playing skilled labour job.

Understanding the different types of commercial licences, primarily AZ and DZ, is crucial in making an informed decision about your career in trucking. Both licences offer great career opportunities but need different levels of commitment.

What is an AZ Licence?

An AZ licence in Canada authorises you to drive a full range of commercial trucks, including tractor-trailers. With this licence, you can operate vehicles with air brakes and a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 4,600 kilograms.

You can also tow trailers or vehicle combinations exceeding 4,600 kilograms. An AZ licence is highly versatile, opening doors to various opportunities in long-haul and cross-border transportation. There’s a bigger demand in the industry for AZ drivers than DZ drivers.

What is a DZ Licence?

The DZ licence, on the other hand, is slightly more specialised. It permits you to operate vehicles like dump trucks, concrete mixers, garbage trucks, and rescue and fire trucks. These vehicles typically have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of more than 4,600 kilograms, but the key difference lies in the size of the trailer they are allowed to tow – usually not exceeding 4,600 kilograms. A DZ licence is ideal for those interested in local deliveries, construction site transportation, and municipal services, offering a stable career path with regular working hours.

AZ or DZ – Which One is the Best for Me?

Choosing between an AZ and DZ licence depends on your career goals, budget, and time commitment. Generally, obtaining an AZ licence is more costly than a DZ licence, with prices ranging from $3,500 to $7,000, depending on the training school and location. Training for a DZ licence will cost you between $1,200 to $2,000. The training duration for AZ licence is typically longer as well.

In terms of earnings, AZ licence holders often have higher income potential due to the wider range of job opportunities, including long-haul and international routes. You can also grow into other positions within the trucking industry including route planning and fleet management. Once you have a good amount of experience, you can also become a truck owner and operator, through which you can directly work with businesses instead of a logistics company.

On the other hand, a DZ licence can lead to stable local employment, which might be more suitable for those seeking a balanced work-life routine.

How much can I earn with AZ vs DZ licence?

On average, an AZ licence driver can earn between $50,000 to $70,000 annually, with experienced drivers potentially earning more. In contrast, DZ licence holders typically engage in local or regional deliveries, driving vehicles like dump trucks or concrete mixers. Their annual income ranges from $40,000 to $60,000, depending on the job’s nature and hours worked.
